The basics: the dog’s endocannabinoid system

Just like humans, our dogs have their own endocannabinoid system. This is a complex network of receptors and cannabinoids that the body produces itself. The most important receptors (CB1 and CB2) are mainly located in our central nervous system and in cells of the immune system. They bind with cannabinoids and thus regulate important processes in our body, such as the perception of stress.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are messenger substances that influence the metabolism of cells and can increase and decrease their activities. Like a kind of “body police”, they monitor the balance of all bodily functions. If this balance is disturbed, they endeavor to restore it.

What disrupts the endocannabinoid system in dogs?

Disorders of the endocannabinoid system occur primarily in anxiety and stress states or with increasing age, especially from the second half of life onwards.

What is CBD? And how does it work in dogs?

And what does CBD have to do with all this? CBD stands for “cannabidiol”, an exogenous, plant-based cannabinoid from the female hemp plant. Important to know: CBD has no intoxicating effect.

It acts on the same receptors in our bodies and those of our dogs as the body’s own cannabinoids.

What are the benefits of CBD for dogs?

A sufficient supply of cannabinoids is essential for physical balance and many bodily functions. If the body’s own system is out of balance, this can have a negative effect on the body. This is precisely when our pets can benefit from a supply of plant-based cannabinoids such as CBD.

CBD can be used to calm anxiety and as a supportive treatment for a range of problems.

What is CBD for dogs all about?

• High-quality product – It is always important to pay attention to high-quality products – because the differences here are huge.
• Correct dosage – Even if you can’t do much wrong here, the right dosage is also crucial for optimal results. In many cases where CBD has already been used and no changes have been observed, the CBD products were either dosed too low or not given long enough. How much CBD your dog should be given depends mainly on its weight. We recommend testing a daily dose of between 0.5 and 1 mg CBD per kilogram of dog weight over a period of at least 4 to 6 weeks before drawing a final conclusion. After a few drops of the oil or a few snacks, there will be no change. The basic CBD level (i.e. 0.5 mg CBD per kilogram per day) must first be built up over 2 to 3 weeks with regular CBD administration. Only then does more have more of an effect and the dose can be increased to 3 to 4 times this amount in extreme stress situations such as New Year’s Eve. However, there are also dogs that require a consistently higher dosage for a constant effect (usually 1 mg per kilogram, in some cases even more).
• Constant administration – CBD should be administered daily and ideally 3 times a day to keep the CBD level constant.
